Hevstina is the northernmost region of the Vavardi Duchy and was established in
278 by the writ of Duke Sivernus dul Acris as a part of several new territories
created under his rule. A long and narrow county, it is outlined by the shallow
River Nord in the east and south and marshy coastal lands of the Charali Plains
to the north.
A flourishing fishing trade is supported by the Kirulean Sea and the River Nord and numerous plantations help to provide the duchy with a wide choice of fruits and spices; most notably the Hevstina Olives which are regarded as an excellent quality throughout the kingdom.
While a treacherous route between Vavard City and the Vandago in the north, the vast majority of Hevstina's population serves in the fields, boats, or quarries that put gold in the pockets of the merchants with investments in the region.
Due in part to its recent establishment as a proper County (and although Vavard had expanded into the coastal territory long before the Duke's seal established it), Charali influences continue to be a major source of tension. While freemen and serfs often adopt the outfits and mannerisms of the plainspeople -- crimson hair is quite common in area -- the gentry have viciously held on to their pure ideals. Red-haired children are often shuffled away from the public eye, and to be seen even talking at length with someone with Charali traits can be a public scandal. It is not uncommon for the 'heathen' Charali to be blamed for droughts and floods; while mobs rarely kill Charali it is not uncommon enough to be rare for angry workers to drive red-haired comrades out of Hevstina entirely.
Racial tensions aside, Hevstina is a quite calm land with relatively few issues beyond the occassional banditry. The Baildana family was titled the region when it was first established and has maintained the line through to the present day as Farra dul Baildana currently holds the title of Countess of Hevstina.
