A province on the southwestern edge of the Northwatch, Casterlay
represents the blending of an ancient northern culture with the Brenlands
and the changes their rulers eventually wrought over the whole of the Five
Duchies. The heavily forested County visited frequently by cold northern
winds from Vandago, Casterlay is a snowy domain where game is plentiful and
natural resources come in abundance.
It is, however, developed enough for the peoples who live there. A proud, tradition-revering people who only submitted to the Consolidation begrudgingly, that stubborn streak has never really left their descendants. The people of Casterlay are known as some of the finest soldiers, sailors and hunters, it's true--but they are only rarely coaxed away from their ancestral holdings.
The city of Seringale is one of few well-developed areas in the County, being the trading hub for those interested in what Casterlay has to offer. It is also built upon one of very few roads that travel north to Vandago and also south to the capital of the Five Duchies, Lithmore. It has been steadily expanded, fortified and rebuilt over the generations, and is a perfectly valid reason, any citizen will tell you, why Casterlay folk are better off staying home where their parents before them lived.
Casterlay Keep is the central holdfast of the region, the seat of power for the Lassider family and the most heavily defended fortress in Casterlay. Rebuilt after Dav ab Harmon tore it apart, rock by rock, in the early days of the Consolidation, it has been made into a testament of Casterlay will and Lassider might. The keep boasts about the men it turns out, though they have rarely seen action far from home, without a Lassider to lead them to it.
Amdair ab Lassider was a previous count of Casterlay, inheriting from his father, as his older brother had already passed on. When Amdair passed on (the second time, the first being faked by a mage), Casterlay came to the daughter of the older brother, only recently come of age, Cassie ab Lassider.
