Positioned between Brune, Volsuan, Elcaster, and Iglisrich, Mont Innes
forms one of the southern sentinels of Lithmore and the kingdom's border
March of Edessa. A comparatively large County, its terrain is mostly
comprised of mountainous, wooded territory through the south, west, and
east, with open plains along its northern front. Due to its mountainous
terrain, Mont Innes features unpredictable and extreme weather, ranging
from bitingly cold winters and temperate to warm summers.
Termed the 'Steel Gate' by its locals, Mont Innes has a reputation for serving as an important southern for armies commuting between Lithmore proper and the southern regions. Because of this, the County has a long tradition of gifted stonemasons and blacksmiths that serve along the pathways through the County. Its treacherous terrain makes trading difficult, but it is easy to defend, and thus an optimal region of the trafficking of soldiers.
Mont Innes takes its strongest cultural influences from Farin and the borderlands to the south in its dress, food, and customs. Its people thus have a strong sense of honour and duty, as well as a keen interest in the martial arts. Over time, the common tongue has been infiltrated with aspects of Farin, and a northern traveller to the County might note subtle differences in accent.
Mont Innes has its traditional ruling family in House Chevalier, the origin of the first Samael Queen of Lithmore, Cellan ab Chevalier. Due to the position of its County, the lords of Mont Innes have typically been generals and soldiers, with a long, proud history serving in the Knights Lithmorran. House Chevalier continue to hold the County to this day, under the protection of Lord Garath ab Chevalier and his heirs, Corentin and Alexander ab Chevalier. Its seat of power it the Keep of Mont Innes, position on the southern edge of the County.
