A great spring flooded a cosmic ocean beneath the burning heat of the sun,
and the churning of fire and water birthed air in steam and earth in rock.
This great tumult created a whirlpool, and in its first revolution the
whirlpool shaped air, fire, earth and water into the world we know. The
second revolution created the higher but imperfect beings that live on
Urth, and the third created the perfect distillation of purity, the Lord of
the Springs. Darkness cast out by the Lord's creation sunk to the bottom
of the ocean, creating a cold and miserable void; shards of this darkness
lodged in the souls of men, birthing evil. Those granted a larger portion
of the darkness became mages, cursed with a taint that allowed them to
touch the power of demons.

An important corollary of this story is that the Lord is not a creator god
- he is a divine force of purity and goodness, but is not responsible for
the existence of mankind or of [[magic|magery]]. Davites worship the Lord not
because he made them, but because he is worthy of worship, and living
according to his example and his rules is how people become sufficiently
good to become one with him after death.
