Branding is a method often used by the [[Holy order of king dav|Holy Order of Dav]] to mark those
who have offended the Church. While not a conviction of [[heretic|heresy]], it is
almost never done unless the crime is serious, but determined to not deserve
the full brunt of heretical execution.

More specifically: It is done when the nature of the crime is such that the
victim can repent better through living after the maiming. After all, the
Church is charged with the care of the soul.

Avoiding or shunning such individuals is often a side effect of the
branding.
