[[The Holy Order of King Dav|Davites]] believe in an afterlife that holds three different
possibilities: joining the [[Lord of the Springs|Lord]], becoming lost in an endless darkness, or
becoming a demon yourself.

Those who have confessed their sins, endured adequate penance and completed
sufficient good works to wash away their taint will join the Lord of the
Springs in eternity at the Fountis (sometimes also called the Wellspring).
This is the spring from which the world was born, and all souls clean
enough to join it flow back to it after death to become part of that
essential purity and goodness. There is much debate about the specific
nature of this afterlife, but religious scholars all concur on the basics:
it is a blessed state without sorrow or suffering.

Those who die still tainted - for example, those who have failed to confess
their sins or been lax in their good works - fail to join with the Lord of
the Springs. Without the Fountis, it's rumored that the afterlife is a
terrible, dangerous existence involving everything from madness to being
feasted upon by demons.

Worst of all, however, is the fate of the uncleansed [[magic|mage]]. If not properly
purified by fire, mages become demons themselves, condemned to an eternity
of darkness. This fate is sheer misery for the mage themselves but also
strengthens the forces of evil: as such, Davism considers it essential to
[[cleansing|cleanse]] mages properly whenever at all possible.
