Can these be made optional in all circumstances? The default ones are detailed and wonderful and frankly I think it makes sense that standard rituals have standard strings. Doing custom ones can be cumbersome and slow and frankly just annoying.

The default ones are indeed interesting and present how "properly" things should be done. When people make up their own honestly they tend towards being less detailed than the default ones just for the sake of speed.

Was the goal here to boost RP or to slow down casting time when other PCs were present for reasons?

At the start it's fun to come up with creative ritual emotes and processes, and it's enjoyable to see what flavour people put in them... but eventually the novelty wares off a bit, and when you start casting around friendly people. You usually duck off into another room to do the rituals quickly without having to re-hash the same emote for the hundredth time, and then return when you're done. It's a bit cumbersome. I think you should be able to do a custom one if you want, but it should not force you- even if people are around.
