Death of a Countess

It is with heavy hearts that news arrives from Endridge: the turmoil in the
Kingdom has claimed further victims. On one of their regular trips between
Lithmore and Endridge, the Countess of Endridge, Nagaita ab Sevoi, her son
Rei, and their guards were beset by bandits, a larger group than one
normally sees in that area. In a brazen attack, several of the guards were
killed and the countess's carriage attacked. A few moments too late, the
remaining guardsmen managed to pull the bandits off of the carriage,
sending what of them they hadn't slain running. But Nagaita was found
already pincushioned within, having bought little Rei the time he needed by
using herself as a shield. The party was turned immediately back around to
return to Lithmore, bringing word and his heir to Count Jei ab Sevoi.

Where Caria's dropping her bid a month ago seemed to clarify things for
many people, who banded behind Cellan, Cellan's dropping from the race
seemed to leave them dumbfounded. Her supporters fractioned, some flocking
to different contenders, while others refrained from declaring at all.
Notably the Persela-Orban Coalition has not directed its influence towards
another contender.

Gifts are circulating with a wide number of different names. Reeves step
up their efforts to keep the peace in Tobin's name, decrying the Amhurst
Atrocities, gaining Tobin support in many locations that not been the
active targets of previous influence. Many do the same as they did before
with different names attached. Most keeps relatively peaceful, but there
is a certain tenseness in the air. However, exceptions do stand out. Fear
rules in Brayston, Gailiech, Eastgale and Casterlay as those voicing
support for those other than Tobin are targeted for muggings, 'protection'
and worse, while Dastur's marquis proclaims against utterly atrocious
behavior from all of the envoys except Tobin's.

Merchantly influences seem to spread Anschel's influence east. Angold,
however, an early front-runner, seems to have lagging support. While
people in many areas still speak favorably of his plans, he fails to gain a
majority of the support in any one area, leading many to dismiss him as a
possible candidate for the throne. Caria shows strong support in the
south. However, the strongest showing is inarguably Tobin's, for now.
Some wonder if this might be the end of it.

_________________________________________________________________________
Finally, some level of stability has emerged in the kingdom's political
leanings. After the swift changes from month to month since Gemara's
death, the lay of the land at last remains recognizable compared to the
previous month. Though Amhurst still maintains that its count is the ideal
candidate for the throne, his influence elsewhere has waned, and the real
contention was reduced to supporters of the Earl Marshall and the
Justiciar.

Lady Caria ab Trenica managed to gain ground with knights and emissaries
sent to many areas with promises of future assistance, reminders of the
Earl Marshall's long record of service, and clarification of the rumors
about her. Several valuable counties swayed to her banners and publically
declared their loyalty.

However, most of those territories left reeling after the Lady Seneschal's
withdrawal - not declaring for anyone the past month - were swayed towards
Lord Tobin ab Samael's cause. Chief among them, the Persela-Orban
Coalition's lands and Endridge both declared for the Justiciar. It seems
Lord Jei ab Sevoi followed Lady Cellan dul Ansari's recommendation to do so
before the word of his wife's death, with no communication coming afterward
from the Count.

That is not to say that all has been calm in the kingdom. Brotherhood
strongarming has continued in Gailiech and Casterlay, and, though it did
not do enough to dissuade supporters of the Earl Marshall in Brune, a few
high-profile knights there were assassinated. In Beresfield, the le'Argent
Shipping Company was rather publicly expelled by the town guard on
accusation of ties to the Brotherhood of Common Goods. As well, many lands
have been noticing a shortage of arms and armor, purchased up nearly as
soon as they are available or straight off of those who carry them.

Despite these lesser troubles, an overall theme of unity amongst the
Lithmorran people emerged on Octobris 27, SC 352. Like a cascade, when
word reached outlying areas that the Lord Justiciar had taken the support
of key strategic domains, those remaining holdouts turned to unity, and as
a whole, Lithmore herself overwhelmingly declared for Lord Tobin.

Everywhere, on everyone's lips, are the words, "Long live the king!"

The word is on everyone's lips - King Tobin's coronation is to be held
in just days. There's been new bustle all around the city as preparations
are made for that and, it seems, multiple celebrations for the entire week
thereafter. Feasts on the streets!

With little information of substance, rumors abound that the main event
will be held on palace grounds or perhaps the cathedral. The only thing
for certain is that His Grace, Benedictus Piuso, will enact the ceremony.

(OOC Reminder: This event is to be held on Friday, Jan 6th at 7pm EST)

_________________________________________________________________________
With growing unrest in Farin and concern about possible Daravi attack
from the still too-silent front, the Farin nobility have raised objections
to the continued leadership of their Duchess, Paloma de Preston. Received
reluctantly since her marriage to Duke Jaafs de Preston, Paloma was not
removed from her position when her husband was executed for treason.
Instead, an agreement was reached that Paloma would marry again to an
appropriate Fariner. With Paloma still unmarried these years later, King
Tobin ab Samael acquiesced to the wishes of the populace and called the
Council of Three.

As the first ducal action since Tobin's coronation and the turmoil of the
Harmon plague, it has done much to solidify the positions of the new dukes
themselves.

Beatrix le Strongjaw, former baroness of Strongjaw and a staunch supporter
of Tobin from early on, was all too eager to use her new ducal powers to
give Tubor's support for removing Paloma.

Ianka ab Harmon von Dusairus, the Duchess of Vandago, was also quick to
agree, pressing that laws should be enacted that no foreigner be permitted
to rule in a land. Though these suggestions were refused, her support of
Paloma's removal was assured, so long as she should be replaced with a
Fariner.

In Vavard, the request was fielded by Loran dul Acris, who has gained
control of Vavard City. After he declared his uncle Auberon dul Vericus
guilty of the murder of his father and sister, Auberon was forced into
hiding, leaving most of his supporters reeling. Loran agreed that Paloma
should be replaced, stipulating specifically that she should be replaced
with the original Montford line, cousins of Duke Simon de Montford before
Jaafs's surprise inheritance. The cause is said to be one close to Loran's
heart after accusing Auberon of attempting to subvert the inheritance in
Vavard.

Taking the reigns in Farin is now to be Duke Cameron de Montford, the
eldest son of Simon de Montford's first cousin, now deceased. Though Simon
and Cameron's father were never close, Cameron is well respected amongst
the Farin nobility and was a successful commander in the assault on Daravi
that claimed Edessa. Unsurprisingly, he was also one of the strongest
voices against first Jaafs and then Paloma's ducal reign.

Paloma herself is encouraged to be welcomed back to Asglen, where her
brother is now Baron. However, it remains to be seen if she will choose to
do so. Duke Cameron has made clear that she is not welcome in Farin.

After briefly closing "for repairs", the Blind Horse has re-opened under
new management. Although all the windows remain boarded up, the door has
been replaced and the worst of the debris has been removed from the
establishment. Blood stains have been painted over and the bar appears to
be stocked with hard liquor offered as dirt cheap shots at all times of the
day.

Rumor has it that the management has been able to declare the location
safe, with the bartender and manager keeping a strict look out for pick
pockets and kicking out trouble makers before fights lead to funerals.

Any questions regarding the Blind Horse's management or the staging of
entertainment there may be addressed to Safir Mara'aye.

Since the posting of the royal wedding banns, excitement has been
building up for the big day. With nobility arriving in the capitol from
across the kingdom, the palace has become a hive of activity and planning.
Gossip is rampant with talk of the possible nuptial festivities and
speculation after the future Queen's dress and jewels.

And at last the palace has given response to some of the anticipation. On
the morning of Maritus 17, 353, the Kings Lord Chamberlain, Senred de
Arwade, circulated the following announcement through the major squares and
plazas of the Capitol:

The Royal Palace does hereby announce the upcoming marriage of His Majesty,
Tobin ab Samael, our sovereign monarch, to Lady Cellan dul Ansari, the
king's seneschal and Duchess of Bren. In honor of the royal union, His
Majesty has declared that the week leading up to the wedding shall be a
time of celebration and a public holiday. Feasting in the streets shall be
the King's gift to his people on this happy occasion. The festivities will
finally culminate in a public grand ball at the palace, following the more
intimate nuptial ceremony.

With the first signs of Spring, the city was glad to see the arrival of
word from Daravi. The first messenger through the thawing passes collapsed
exhausted on arrival in Farin from the haste, but his news was some of the
best Lithmore has had in some time: Daravi and Lithmorran forces met on the
road and, by all accounts, Lithmore came out on top. Though there was dead
on both sides, including a valiant Fariner who charged in heroically,
Lithmorran command believes that they should be able to get in some much
needed supplies and may even be able to press an attack on what they are
calling Sands Fortress, currently in Daravi control.

Word is everywhere about Countess Dmitreva de Garod's upcoming
Murder Masquerade Ball. But time to order a suitable costume is
slowly running out! Flyers set up all over Lithmore suggest that Miss
Kassia's Vellum & Velvet up on Merchant's row is the place to go
for this; She has a list of suitable masks to pick from - and the
poorer parts of the populace whisper about how the Countess even
subsidizes the price of your outfit if you are quick to order.

Of course, designing an outfit takes time, and with many
people rushing to get their orders in, it might not be ready before
the ball if you wait too long ...

OOC: Please hurry to arrange for your costume if you plan to partake,
so crafters don't have to work at the last OOC minute. The Ball is
this Friday, Feb 24th at 7PM EST.

In the hours after midnight on Solisda, June 3, a town crier was sent
out, requesting assistance from any Knight or Reeve present to go to Paarin
Park upon the discovery of a bloodied corpse hanging off the statue.
Crowds quickly gathered and immediately were awe struck to see the person
displayed in such a gruesome manner. It was the Lord Chamberlain of
Lithmore, Senred de Arwade. With his throat sliced upon, and with blood
still flowing freely, the lifeless and limp corpse had a messaged carved
in, that those present had laid eyes upon. Many of the whispers of the
crowd were heard to be reciting the message. "For Piuso"

In a single strange and controversial evening, three different
individuals received three very different punishments.

Julea Sanguine, finally apprehended in Southside by the law after the
kill-on-sight warrant that was issued, was drawn-and-quartered in River
Square for the crime of high treason. The Justiciar himself presided over
the sentence.

Shortly thereafter, Mother Leto Bharani of the Holy Order was burnt for
magery, an accusation that surprised many in the crowd. Shortly before
death, however, her eyes flashed purple and she let out a feral, almost
inhuman scream, confirming the verdict.

Lastly, former Cardinal Benedictus Piuso was branded on the neck for
fornication. Though no more detail was given than that, whispers and
rumors suggest his partner was none other than the deceased Julea Sanguine.

Shimacatta Onard was publicly revealed as the new Grand Inquisitor in the
wake of these punishments. The city currently rests in an uneasy silence,
wondering about the ramifications of these events.

With several high profile members of the Brotherhood recently executed,
including the ever-popular Tenebrae, and repeated raids into the
Southside's borders, the poorer residents of Lithmore are seething with
resentment.

Sensing a power vacuum, street gangs are popping up in every tenement
block, attempting to push out the Brotherhood's "protection" of businesses
in lieu of their own. Fights between Brotherhood members and gangs have
taken place, with some businesses being broken into and looted.

Those that were already wary of the almhouse and the Church incursion into
the Southside have become enraged with the death of the popular Mother Leto
for magery. Opinions are torn between those that feel she was cut down by
a money-hungry Church that did not want to spend its funds on charity and
those that feel that the Church inevitably casts its black sheep and unfit
clergy members to the poor. Fliers advertising the almshouse have been
torn down by angry mobs and it is not uncommon for those working on the
premises to be harassed or constantly repairing damages done to the
property.

Citizens should be warned that this is an especially dangerous time to be
traveling in the South Side. Outsiders will be met with suspicion at best
and angry mobs at worst. Even those that are residents should be warned,
as fights are breaking out over the smallest of offenses.

The Lithmorran Court today officially confirmed a tale that's been
circulating unofficially through Lithmore: Ari op Orban, the former court
bard to the Lady Marisa dul Damassande of Lyndale, has been granted a noble
title. He has been raised to the Barony of Savir, taking the place of the
deceased Bardane ab Whirothol, a traitor and a heretic.

Subtle mystery swirls around the reason for the appointment. The official
cited reasons involve his actions investigating the Amhurst Atrocity during
the succession crisis, his aiding of Lady dul Damassande during the Mad
Baroness Arely ab Lassider's attempt on his life, and a history of
providing counsel to the Throne. However, there are those who sugget he
has performed other unknown services that perhaps may explain how he became
a trusted advisor in the first place.

Despite the bitter cold of the Lithmorran weather, the city's notables
turned out in droves for this historic occasion.

A processional of standard-bearers represented not only the Five Duchies,
but also the Hillmen and Charali people, a rare inclusion even in events

His Royal Majesty was attended by the new Baron of Savir, Ariel le Orban,

Her Royal Majesty was attended by the Lady Chancellor, Marisa dul

in red and gold.

A brief ceremony was presided over by Bishop Johnan ab Petrum, ending with
an exchange of rings, the King crowning his wife as Queen, and a
traditional Lithmorran daisy chain.

Afterward, many of the guests repaired to a reception in the Hall of Kings,
enjoying drink, food from across the Kingdoms, and music before departing.

The mood throughout the city is one of great cheer. Long live the King and

Votumas, Decembris (Month 12) 3, In the Year of Our Lord, 353

Shortly after the wedding of His Majesty, Tobin ab Samael to his Seneschal,
Lady Cellan of House Ansari, the royal court of Lithmore was sent into a
flurry by the arrival of a small group of young noblewomen marked out to
serve the new Queen as ladies-in-waiting. Perhaps even more surprising
than Her Majesty's choices, which consisted of a high-born lady from each
duchy of Lithmore, was her selection of Lady Lien le Storm, the heir to the
Tubori barony of Stronjaw and daughter of Baron and Baroness Jirand and
Myrie le Storm, as the Queen's chief lady-in-waiting.

The arrival of the ladies spark the imagination of the young men at
court in particular, who, upon hearing the news, immediately departed in
order to begin composing sonnets and other forms of love poetry, all
dedicated to the young ladies in question.

flurry by the arrival of a small group of young noblewomen marked out to
serve the new Queen as ladies-in-waiting.

Rumors about the new Baron of Savir's ennoblement have taken on a more
vulgar and offensive turn lately, even daring to involve the new Queen as
well.

In response, the Lord is offering a bounty of thirty gold to anyone who can
track down the initial source of the rumor to be brought to justice for
such slanders against himself and, more importantly, the Crown.

The Lord warns that anyone who brings him false information will not only
not be paid, but prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

There was an attack on Edessa Keep several weeks ago, where the Grand
Master Paere de Laerne was taken prisoner. The rest of the Edessan Knights
held off the Daravi, but the Grand Master has been reported as missing in
action, and his whereabouts remain unknown, as does whether he is truly

A small but deadly force of Knights made their way through Southside the
other day. Scuttlebutt suggests that the Grand Master, Earl Marshall and
Sir ab Porter all went to the Blind Horse to enact an arrest, but were
confronted by a gang of ruffians angry about their presence.

Tensions were defused without violence, it seems, but an increasing wave of
anti-law, anti-Northside sentiment has broken out in the wake of the
incidents. Agitators have convinced many of the youths in the Southside to
take up weapons and protest against any further incursions into their

The High Synod's vote to remove the patriarchy from the office of the
Monarchy has been confirmed. Public statements from the High Synod on the
subject are as follows, "Those of the highest order of piety found any
claims by the monarchy on the Holy Office of Patriarch to be of an outdated
tradition that misplaces the holiest of offices into demonstratively secular
hands.

King Tobin ab Samael has been found through scholarly research and prayer
alike, to carry little, if any, of the divine blood of Dav in his veins.

The secular monarchy, a governing body concerned chiefly with politics,
cannot effectively and righteously represent the Lord of the Springs' will
on Urth."

The High Synod has not abolished the office of the patriarch, and currently
convenes on the matter of the church's structure going forward. Future
announcements are expected.

In late Januaris, SC 354, Lithmore saw pillars of fire strike the skies.
Citizens also reported sightings of the remains of strange chalk circles.
The weather became, whilst still cold, consistently warmer and warmer -
unseasonably so.

Then, suddenly, on the 2nd of Februarius, two more pillars of fire struck
the sky, and the heat crossed a threshold. Sudden downpour mixed with the
rapid melting of the winter's ice led to a flash flood of devastating
proportions - thousands died. Lithmore's population has been reduced by
over three quarters, and most extremely in the poorer areas where few
buildings stood tall enough (and those that did were hardly built strong
enough) to survive the onslaught.

Few people know the truth of what happened, but the flood waters eventually
receded... Leaving survivors to face the ruin of a city they once called
home.

Though several local buildings survived, there are few places entirely
untouched by the floods. Repairs are underway, but Lithmore shall feel the
loss of life and landmark for a long time to come.

What was to be a simple mass went far astray as the congregation
rebelled against the idea that they might be responsible for the flood,
feeling it was instead the leadership in the Order that had failed them.
Tensions and voices rose. Facing harsh criticism, Cedany ab Clarke told
those gathered that they abused their Cardinals and she had no intention to
stand for them any longer and stormed out.

As word filtered throughout the city on the mass, a crowd began to gather
in the square, worked to a fever pitch. Cedany, they proclaimed, was no
Cardinal of theirs, and they would have one who would bring strength to the
Order and hold the city together in this time of need. They would not
stand for Cedany as Cardinal. As she addressed them, their cries only grew
louder, and, caught up in the furor, a small group rushed forward violently
at the erstwhile Cardinal. As Cedany ab Clarke hit the ground and her
blood began to pool around her, the square quieted in horror. The Cardinal
was dead. Furor turned to panic, and the square emptied.

Reeling, the Synod has been called to convene to select the next Cardinal
of Lithmore. Without a clear candidate as a replacement, it is unknown how
long they may deliberate.

((OOC: As an OOC note, thank you to Cedany for handling this well and
adding to the RP for everyone. This was our first ousting resulting from
the guild approval system, and I wanted to clarify that death is -not-
automatically the result of an ousting, but instead Cedany's wishes for how
to see it handled to give her some decent closure, having seen it
through.))

With so many dead, and the pyres still burning Southside, the labour

for a dwindling work force that are being offered higher and higher wages

Fields are going unploughed. Harvests not brought in and animals lost
without people to tend to them.

Drastic action needs to be taken to further stall price rises and food
shortages and word has been sent out that the Crown is encouraging its
Nobles to ask those within their Counties to make the big move to Lithmore

After months of deliberation, the High Synod finally handed down a
singular proclamation, posting it to every board, every lamp post, and
every tree on worthy corner:

"Hear ye, Hear ye,

The High Synod has sat within its Holy Walls and debated for many nights,
pausing in its deliberations only to aide the people of Lithmore during and
after the catastrophe of the floods.

It is with great hope for the future that the High Synod, composed of the
highest personages within the Holy Order, representing the farthest reaches
of the realm, have decided the disposition of the Patriarchy from this day,
Eldes, Maritus 29, SC 354. Henceforth, the Cardinal of Lithmore shall
attain by right, upon selection and confirmation by the High Synod itself,
the full powers of the patriarchy, to be retained so long as the patriarch
the will of the Lord of the Springs, as best interpreted by this most holy
body.

The High Synod, to meet the needs of Lithmore in these dire times, has
chosen to adapt its role to guide the patriarch as follows:

- The High Synod shall appoint the Grand Inquisitor, all Cardinals, and
the Patriarch of the Holy Order.

- The High Synod may call itself to meet at its own behest, or at the
request of any member of the High Synod.

- The High Synod may veto or overrule any activity or law passed by a
member of the Holy Order.

- The High Synod may enact new canonical laws as guided to do so by the
Lord of the Springs.

- The High Synod must confirm canonical laws presented by the Patriarch.

The Lord of the Springs blessings be upon us all."

The Grand Masters of Vavard, Vandago, Tubor, and Farin, present
primarily for the debates of the High Synod, came together in the dead of
night appointed Bryne ab Porter as the new Earl Marshall. It's rumored
that Grand Master Paere de Laerne was not present.

Rumors about the event abound. Some say that the the previous Earl
Marshall, Caria ab Trenica, retired in anger at the disposition of the
patriarchy. Others say from old age and weariness, but even darker rumors
hint that her own Grand Masters threatened her life if she did not step
aside of her own accord.

Regardless, it's clear that the Countess of Brune still holds powerful sway
in both the Knights Lithmorran and the Lithmorran Court as, when
negotiations were through, rumor has it she declared publicly, handing over
her keys, "Sir Bryne ab Porter is the Earl Marshall now, take these to him,
squire. And may the Lord of the Springs bless him... he's going to need
it."

Perhaps it's true as there's rumors that some members of the Knights
Lithmorran are not pleased with the appointment, reactions ranging from
agreement to a "necessary evil" to more active rebellion. Ab Trenica's
firm stance on her selection, however, has served to calm immediate threats
to ab Porter's ascendency.

_________________________________________________________________________
In the months following the devastation of the flood, life in Lithmore
has fallen into a new sort of normal. The dead have been seen to and given
their last rites, often en masse where no relatives survived. Whole
families were wiped out, and nearly all in the city lost at least someone.
In total, more than 30,000 are believed dead, though the numbers are still
met with disbelief at the sheer, devestating magnitude. Those remaining in
the city have set to the hard efforts of restoration, rebuilding their
houses and shops, while work on public locales are ongoing as well.

And to replace those who are lost, new people have begun to filter into the
city. Called upon by the city and their local lords, and inspired by the
possibility of incentives, many have started to arrive both from the
surrounding lands and foreign duchies. While the skilled craftsmen and
builders have been especially welcome, many have found their arrival to be
somewhat premature in a city where food is still scarce and stable
buildings overcrowded. Shipments of supplies have hardly kept pace with
the new arrivals, and prices on both food and luxuries remain staggeringly
high.

The unluckiest of the immigrants have found themselves Southside, the most
damaged portion of the city, adding to the strain on pavilions set up for
temporary shelter, and tensions there have begun to rise again between
overcrowding and the fading disbelief, not helped by the clashing of so
many new to Lithmore at once.

Efforts to renovate Lithmore in the wake of the Flood have kicked into
high gear lately, the Crown dispersing money on several fronts.

The largest-scale effort is the construction that has begun in Southside,
simple wooden tenements being erected along South and Tavern Road to house
about twelve hundred people - slightly more than actually survived in this
hard-hit area of the city.

Temporarily living under pavilions in Church Plaza, the Southsiders are
being provisioned as payment for their work in building these new homes.
Scuttlebutt suggests that the Crown and Order have mostly worked together
to fund this project, along with one or two individual contributors.

Construction is also beginning on a new orphanage specifically for
Southside, again funded by the Crown via the Sisters of St. Celeste. The
location is expected to be near the Southside Almshouse, perhaps to allow
the two charity institutions to work together.

Not everything is happening Southside, however. The city gates and squares
are also seeing work, as is the Orphanage, Almshouse and Paarin Park
itself. An individual fund is being maintained for people who wish to apply
for help in rebuilding their homes, allowing anybody in Lithmore to seek
out aid. While the Crown is behind much of this, other individual
contributors have made their mark on specific projects.

Overall, the city appears to be making a concerted push towards a return to
normality.

Rumor has long held that the flood that affected Lithmore had great
impact on the Brotherhood of Common goods. With the body count largely
comprised of those stricken by poverty and living in the squalid conditions
of Southside, the Brotherhood reportedly lost enough men to endanger their
operations. To aid in the recovery, it's said the Tenebrae him or herself
ordered that members of the Brotherhood stand down, thus causing a good
number of thieves to abandon the city when faced with the inability to
pursue their livelihood.

This has caused a marked increase in the banditry across the duchy of
Lithmore, and even an increase in other duchies, in the short term. An
influx of fresh blood into Lithmore, however, has swelled the ranks of the
Brotherhood with fresh faces, and those criminals who have been chomping at
the bit to return to work have grown twice as vicious. The prolonged
safety of traveling in Southside is finally over, and Lithmore itself is
experiencing a wave of crime as cutpurses, muggers, bandits, and burglars
make a comeback.

With repairs and restorations in full swing, Lithmore City and her
environs have been abuzz with activity. Everywhere, there is the sawing of
timbers, the clank of hammer on nail, and the sounds of toil and labor.
But with manpower still scarce, the roads between provinces have become
startlingly dangerous. Mercenary companies are booming as whispers that
the Brotherhood of Common Goods has laid claim to the most profitable trade
routes travel through the gentry like wildfire. True or not, it is certain
that people have become more anxious about travelling; and rumors that
Reeve guardsmen have turned to banditry themselves to supplement their
meagre wage only make things worse.

With these things fresh in mind, His Royal Majesty, King Tobin ab Samael
has issued the following decree:

Be it known, to all citizens of Lithmore and her Duchies, that the
organization commonly known as the Brotherhood of Common Goods is hereby
denounced under the laws and policies of the Kingdom. Membership in this
group, or aid or succor offered thereon, will be punished by hard labor for
the Kingdom, in addition to punishment for any other crimes such
association has inspired.

May Dav watch over us all.

It was announced earlier this morning that the Patriarch of Dav's Order
has declared his retirement, leaving the matter of his successor to the
High Synod. Many rumors abound as to the reason for this, but the
Patriarch himself stated that he simply felt he had done what the Lord
wished of him. Now that the worst of the transition is over, he believes
it time to let things pass onwards.

In the wee hours of the morning, the sounds of booted feet trampled through
the streets of Lithmore: lanterns were hoisted, cries were launched, and
specific doors were rapped upon by gauntleted knuckles. Barring that, the
doors were beaten down with strong shoulders or battering rams. The
Lithmorran Reeves were literally on the march, conducting night raids-- and
their targets were not selected randomly.

An old, timid-seeming forester, an ancient acolyte in Southside chapel
whispered to dabble in poisons, two prostitutes of questionable moral
fiber, and several employees of the Blind Horse and the Merchant's Guild
were rounded up; so were known cutpurses and petty thieves, frequent
offenders of the law. Nothing seemed to tie them together, save for the
overt actions of the Reeves when apprehending these several men and women:
"You are hereby under arrest for crimes against his Majesty the King and
association with the Brotherhood of Common Goods."

As morning approached and the shock of the coordinated effort subsided,
official notices from the Reeves revealed the conclusion of a successful--
but probably incomplete-- operation, for the Reeves continue to scour the
streets and question passersby, asking pointed questions about the
locations and known haunts of very specific people.

On the evening of Augustus 15th, year of our Lord 354 the High Synod
came together for the purpose of filling the vacant office of Cardinal of
Lithmore and, by extension, the Patriarchy.

After many long days of discussion, they finally emerged with a resolution.
Romana von Mestan of Vandago, having acted previously as Grand Inquisitor,
was to be raised to become the Cardinal of Lithmore. Rumor has it that the
vote was unanimous except for one, although the ballot is, of course,
secret.

In the early hours of Votumas, Augustus (Month 8) 19, In the Year of Our
Lord 354, news disseminated from a palace buzzing with excitement that Her
Majesty, Queen Cellan ab Samael of Lithmore, had gone into labour with her
long-awaited child. Accompanied by her ladies-in-waiting, among which were
Lady Lien le Storm of Strongjaw and Lady Merle ab Trenica of Brune, the
Queen was shut in the royal apartments under heavy guard.

By sundown of the same day, official word had been sent from the palace of
the birth of the female infant who was now slated to be first in line to
the Samael throne.

Accompanied by an outburst of sudden celebration throughout the city, a
further proclamation was released by His Majesty, Tobin ab Samael:

On this day, Votumas 19, In the Year of Our Lord, 354, Her Highness,
Princess Caitrin ab Samael, has been borne by the Queen of Lithmore. Both
mother and child are healthy, praise be the Lord of the Springs.

In the wake of the birth, all official appointments with Her Majesty were
redirected until after such a time that she has recovered from the birth.

Last night, fires ravaged parts of Lithmore and coincided with the
jailbreak of the Tenebrae of the Brotherhood, Doctor Sekunder Alhambra. By
direction of the Lord Justiciar of the Reeves, security has been improved
throughout the city of Lithmore and patrolling Reeves are busy questioning
civilians. The gist of the edict is clear: upon penalty of being charged
with obstructing the King's Justice, any who associated with Doctor
Alhambra must report to the Reeves for questioning.

The Reeves' other direction is equally succinct: all citizens must report
to the Reeves those seen in the company of Doctor Alhambra, as he clearly
worked in concert with others.

The Justiciar himself released the following statement: "We pursue
Tenebraes who seek commercial gain or run afoul of our laws; we condemn
those Tenebraes who subvert the King's Justice for their illicit aims; but
we _hunt_ those with murderous intent. If you must, dig a tunnel in Ahalin
Tower: it risks fewer lives than burning down the gardens or ravaging the
already-despoiled Southside."

A statement was issued this morning from the office of the Cardinal,
worded as follows:

'There have been multiple reports of one we know to be the Rubeus, dressed
in the cloak of the Reeves, appearing to those who least suspect it and
seeking to sway them through words or through fear. His Holiness urges all
good Davites to pray for wisdom from the Lord of the Springs, that they
might not fall prey to the taint of this vile mage, nor to his cunning
words. In addition to this, His Holiness states that this man is highly
dangerous, and that all precautions should be taken accordingly. Upon
sight of this figure, citizens are advised to first spit hemproot upon him,
that he may not draw on his taint, and then to call for the assistance of
any Knights available. In order to allow all citizens, rich or poor,
access to hemproot, an arrangement will be made with the merchants to allow
anyone to purchase it at half price, although this will be limited to five
sprigs each.'

In the morning hours of River Square, the avowed Tenebrae, Doctor
Sekunder Alambra, had his life cut short with the bladed edge of an
executioner's sword. A recent escapee of Ahalin Tower and the custody of
the Reeves, Alambra assumed a new identity-- Ghibran, the owner of the
Mudpie Tavern-- and designed to wreak havoc at the Yule party held at the
Town Hall. Dressed in dark leathers and armed with a sword, he confessed
to interrogators that he meant to capture a 'silk-clad lady' for ransom;
and he also, once spotted, attempted to murder the Justiciar of the
Reeves.

He was taken into custody by the Reeves and Dame Caria ab Trenica, and
later questioned by the Justiciar, Sir Paere de Laerne, and Dame Florense
the Countess of Sartez.

In a public statement issued by the Reeves, the Justiciar, Gavin ab
Harkness, expressed somber appreciation for the capture and execution of
the latest Tenebrae, but warned the populace of Lithmore that there shall
surely be another and to remain on guard. He also avowed that this was his
final act as Justiciar and that the kingdom will remain in safe hands under
Vivienne Guiscard, the current Proconsul of Lithmore.

The following message has been plastered all over the city:

Fine citizens of Lithmore,

Joyous Yule to you all! I hope you will pardon me for not stepping forth
publicly. I have a severe allergy to the headsman's block, and we've all
seen what happens when our fine and noble Reeves think they've caught me.
Nevertheless, I bear them no ill will, and I hope that in time, you can all
come to forgive them, as well as myself, for the black cloud that was
placed over the Yule festival by my very public execution.

I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to Vivienne Guiscard,
who I understand will be taking over as Justiciar. She has a very big pair
of boots to fill, and I hope you will all offer her your full support in
seeing me brought to justice. I would also like to bid a fond farewell to
Gavin ab Harkness. A more noble and honorable man has never held the
position of Justiciar, and I will be saddened to no longer have him chasing
after me.

Were you aware, fine Lithmorrans, that I offered him the bounty which had
been posted on Mr. Wolfe Journier? He refused! Even when I urged him to
take the money, and put it towards the repair of the south side in the wake
of the fire. The former Justiciar deferred that honor upon me, and so I
shall donate the Brotherhood's portion of Mr. Journier's bounty toward the
restoration of the Communal Garden. It is a paltry 500 silver, but perhaps
it can be used to plant a rose garden. It seems only fitting that money
which was once put towards Mr. Journier's death now be used to honor the
memory of his wife.

I close here, fine citizens, 'lest I wax poetic and emotional, dealing
further damage my hard-earned reputation as the black-hearted fiend who
plagues you all in your homes and shops.

Don't talk to strangers, because they're only there to do you harm.
Don't smell the flowers, they're an evil drug to make you lose your mind.
Don't dance in darkness, you may stumble and you're sure to fall.

The early morning of Circadi, Decembris 12, the growing crowds gathering
in the Church Square screamed out in terror as the sight of a savage,
rather large looking man stomped his way in unexpectedly. Sources say he
was dragging the corpse of a half-eaten horse and even paused to take a few
more bites. With blood dripping from his maw, and his body covered in
likely the horses fluids, the Reeves were summoned, cried for, but before
they could arrive the man had already crashed through the thickets of
people, reportedly sending a few easily flying to the ground. The corpse
of the horse is believed to still be present as the Reeves have focused on
trying to find the man in the meantime. Those close to the situation
report the savage having bloodstained clothing, and bloodshot eyes. No
other descriptions were given.

Blood spilled in the streets Southside, as the man dubbed as the Hillbeast
rampaged through the streets. No one was spared and their seemed to be no
discernable reason nor cause for his actions.

Before the Hillbeast left Southside, it is rumored that some brave soul,
disguised in filth and rags, found him chewing on the face of his latest
victim at the Plaza and attacked. Here, accounts from those that dared to
stay around long enough to watch, vary.

Some say the fight went on for hours and ended with a rather lucky and
leathal blow of the bloodied axe of the hillbeast against the beggar's
chest. Whilst others say it went on for a little more than a few minutes,
finishing with him leaping upon them and knocking them out. But they all
agreed on one thing: The Hillbeast won, and carried them off, the only
identifiable trait of his victim, bloodied dusky raven locks of hair clinging
to her brow.

A couple members of the brother hood attempted to stop the Hillbeast on
Consolidation Street and he beat them to near death, shouting 'Mine'. No
trace of him or his victim has been seen since.

In the early hours of the morning, just as a blizzard set in, the
Hillbillybeast roared through the Western gates, dumping the body of
the Baroness Lien le storm just outside of the Square. He didn't linger
long and was long gone before people arrived on the scene.

It is said that she yet lives, though her injuries are serious, and
her memory has yet to fully returned. Rumors speculate that she didn't
even recognise her own brother, much less anyone else that visited her
bed side. In the early evening, she left without discharge, carried by
a Noble Lord with a Reeve escort to the Palace and has been secured
safely there.

Known to be a fair fighter in Lithmore, having received merits and
praise for her actions against the demons, people are terrified that
a beast strong enough to take her down, wanders the streets freely,
killing, and eating his victims. Some wonder how it is that Lady le
Storm was spared this dire fate.

Following the vicious roar of something monstrous, the citizens of the
Southern district were once again rocked by the presence of the one known
simply as "The Hillbeast." Witnesses say the beast barged into the Blind
Horse, tearing the place to pieces once again, content on finding whatever
it is he was looking for, only to be confronted by a Reeve, who's name at
the time was not known. Sources say the fight lasted longer than most
would have imagined, and the Reeve woman never gave up, despite the
multiple bashes to the face, and kicks to the head, she kept fighting until
the beast finally slide the axe across her throat, letting loose a vicious,
bloodcurdling roar that shook the walls of the establishment.

Not even the known members of the Brotherhood attempted to stop the
behemoth this time, watching as the blood-soaked Hillman exited the Blind
Horse with his prize. The corpse of Calindra dul Danaria. With crisp
barks the beast left the scene, carrying the corpse off into the thickets
of Southside, or so many believed.

Hours later a town crier swept through the streets claiming to have spotted
the beast on Church Street, hurling the corpse for the people, and
barraging back out the western gate. His exit did not come without
punishment however, as apparently one of the guards managed to plunge a
dagger into his leg before meeting his own death with an axe blow. The
second guard, newly stationed was said to be screaming upon the back of the
Hillbeast, drug into the blanketing thickets of snow that started to form
from the oncoming blizzard.

With the body count literally mounting, corpses piled up in several
places across Lithmore, including the Communal Gardens of Southside,
several official measures have been enacted to reduce the threat of the
Hillbeast, who plagues the Capital by stoking wanton violence, practicing
cannibalism, and strikes terror into the hearts of the innocent.

First, a stringent curfew has been ordered from dusk to dawn, with no
citizen of Lithmore permitted to leave their dwelling-places or public
indoor gathering areas, such as taverns or inns. Transit to and from those
places is authorized, but solely in groups of two or more. Loiterers will
be punished.

Second, no child under the age of twelve years is permitted away from his
dwelling-place without escort, at any time.

Third, all persons of means are required to open their doors to the
homeless and allow them quarter throughout the period of curfew; this
includes secular institutions and businesses, but does encompass personal
houses. Guests may be required to compensate their beneficiary by
performing labor.

A spokesperson for the Crown, Gavin ab Harkness, related that these
measures would expire upon the ordered execution of the Hillbeast, per her
Majesty's decree, and stressed that cooperation during times of intensified
chaos is necessary to maintain our livelihoods. He added, on her Majesty's
behalf, that the thoughts and prayers of all members of the Court are with
those who perished during this tragedy, especially the children.

In the early morning of Januarius 3, the capital was awakened by the
sound of multiple loud horns being bellowed far off towards the western
mountains. Mixed speculations are present as to what the sounds of the
horns were. Some claim they were warnings from the distant Hillman tribes
to other clans, having suddenly encountered their own bloodied kinsman, the
Hillbeast. Others believe that perhaps this Hillbeast is not as rabid as
some would believe and has rallied support behind him. The different views
of many towards Hillman in general have made the guesses towards the sound
of war horns a complete mystery.

After hours of horns being sounded in various areas of the western
mountains, the cold air grew dead silent, leaving only the howling winds of
the cold winter for the guards stationed on the gates of Lithmore. What or
why the horns were sounded is still yet a mystery.

conveniently built close to the western exit, and packed with children.
Witnesses claim seeing the escaping victims fleeing from the scene,
screaming for the guards. The life of a boy however, was not spared as the
man-creature like savage managed to find a grip on the frail life. The
sound of flesh being ripped from bone was heard next as the Hillbeast
enjoyed a bit of his new victim.

His breakfast however was interrupted by the arrival of a brave man of the
Order. High Inquisitor Shimacatta Onard. Calling upon the prayer of Dav,
and the strength of his Lord, the man attempted to subdue the beast. It
was however, futile, and merely lasted no more than a few minutes before
the HIllbeast was seen dragging the defenseless Inquisitor back out of the
gates by one leg.

Afterwards, an elderly woman reported seeing a sleeping guard nearby the
Darton Gate, and claims that this may have been the reason for the delayed
warning to the Hillbeast's visit.

The horns were once again sounded on the evening of Januarius 7. This
time however, they were timely, but still inefficient. Storming through
the city gates with the High Inquisitor Shimacatta Onard over one shoulder,
the corpse of man over the other, the Hillbeast was truly a sight. Not
only was there two bodies over his shoulder, but he also was dragging the
dead, mutilated horse of the Lady Justiciar Vivienne ab Guiscard behind
him, with her wrists shackled to the dead beast. The guards, newly
appointed with the few prior having been killed, called for help, not
daring to face the beast with even two of them present.

This time his intent seemed rather less for children and more for the blood
of an inquisitor, as he turned to smite the defenseless man, chopping his
stomach open for the world to see. Even as blood and intestines fell about
the man's feet the beast gathered up a lengthy coil of his innards,
wrapping it twice about his neck and throwing the other end over a hook of
the gate to heft him high into the air. Even as the man's feet danced to
the hangman's beat the beast turned to the Justiciar. She too was thrown
upon a spare hook, metal piercing skin to leave her to hang.

Soon enough a crowd had gathered to view the spectacle, a select few
hardier individuals approaching where the two hung, the Earl Marshal
braving the waterfall of blood and gore beneath the Inquisitor to catch him
as he was freed from his own entrails, and doing the same for the Justiciar
when the group moved to free her from the hook that she had been set upon
in turn.

Arriving with perfect timing, the Cardinal Romana von Mestan stepped up to
the Inquisitor's side as he was laid out in the pool of his own entrails
and crimson blood to deliver the man's final rights. Meanwhile the doctor
Florense ab Flewelling had arrived, and while she worked with the upmost
diligence to preserve the fellow's life, the most that she could do in the
end was deliver a dose of nightshade and watch his life drain away.
Many are speculating now if the Order will in fact activate the Knights to
help deal with this matter, as the death of an Inquisitor may very well be
placed on their hands.

Rumor has it that threats have been exchanged between the Grand
Inquisitor, Mesirin ab Azazerith and High Inquisitor von Vakhrova over the
release of a suspected mage, the Charali Sparrow Hawk, from prison.
Apparently the former threatened to take the matter to the Cardinal and
state he was unfit for office, and the latter threatened to have the High
Inquisitor arrested for heresy if she did not fall in line.

The HILLBEAST has struck again. The ill, infirm, and hypochondriacs of
Lithmore watched in horror as the bodies of several young children - many
of them missing body parts and appearing as if they'd been torn by teeth -
were delivered to the Madison Hospital Morgue. According to one of the
nurses, one of the children had been left on the Cathedral steps, brought
up by a kind soul that wanted to see it properly buried. The Hospital is
holding the bodies for the Reeves, but it's expected that burials will be
announced soon.

Workers filtered in and out of the Blind Horse since the latests batch of
deaths. Smokey stacks of putrid and burning wood shavings and straw burned
through the night. By morning, the tavern had been cleared and remains
open. Word from the workers is that the tavern was filled with the torn
body parts of women. Bookies on the streets are taking bets on whether the
Happy Harem will remain open during this fiasco.

Votumas, Decmebris 30:

Another half-eaten corpse was found upon the Cathedral steps during the
late hours of the night, assumedly left so it might be buried. Only a few
hours after its discovery, a young merchant woman was attacked near the
communal gardens near where Consolidation Street turns into Park. She
encountered the grisly sight of the Mad Man from the Hills eating the body
of a dead boy. Before she knew it, the man was upon her. Luckily, she
escaped, though the man killed her horse.

The New Year has brought new deaths, this time right outside the door of
the Blind Horse Fences, with the body parts of a dead man decorating the
tunnels underneath the popular seedy tavern. The Hillbeast, it seems, has
rung up the New Year in style.

Two weeks into the new year, with the Hillbeast still not caught, more
rumors begin to surface:

Ain't them Hill People supposed to be a big lot o' idiots? Don't see how
just one 'em whee monsters has brought the whole Arien city to its knees.
By Dav, if that's all it takes to cripple the Knights and Crown's Army,
ain't be surprised if the Daravi start enlisting them!

The extensive search for the Hillbeast continues without results, with
troops leaving and returning in massive groups, sweeping the country and
mountain sides with thorough intent. Whether the savage is just being
narrowly missed, or whether the beast is actually avoiding the troops
altogether is still yet a mystery. It has not yet been determined whether
the savage has a mind to think on its own, or acts on impulse. Whatever
the case may be, a returning battalion of Reeves and Knights returned with
a report of a sighting of the Hillbeast, and more.

It was reported that early in the morning of Januarious 16, a small squad
of Knights encountered the savage on the east end of the Tarn Mountains.
The beast was engaged not long after, with intent to strike the beast down
and kill it. The knights this morning however, were not alone.

The patrol leader reported seeing multiple apertures' appear from out of
nowhere, and from them cloaked individuals who concealed their identities.
It was then the patrol noticed what it was that had been helping, Mages.
Lightning cracked the sky and fire tore across the mountain side as the
patrol of Knights peddled back, not readily equipped to deal with a
Hillbeast and Mages in the same instance. As the patrol retreated back
darkness encompassed the side of the mountain's face, draining sight from
anything beyond the dark veil. Whether the Mages succeeded or not was not
confirmed, but both Hillbeast and the element wielding witches vanished
over the other side of the mountain, far beyond the safe travel of horse
back.

The Knight patrol have no initial report as to why they were assisted by
the witches, and can only assume that perhaps they too were a target for
the wide spread havoc the Hillman caused. Camps have been set up on the
base of the mountain side with plans to score the mountain to the other
side and investigate beyond the Tarn's eastern face. An area not visited
often by that of Lithmore.

The Grand Magnate and the mute girl caused quite a stir, with Capay
seen to be so drunk he could barely stand, but that still didn't stop
him climbing onto the table and letting out what could be called a song
in only the loosest possible terms. Sounded more like a cat-wail if
you ask me. And what was he singing? A song of apology to the girl
simply known as Ash. Not only that, but the mute girl dared to slap
him hard on the cheek. Eventually, the Grand Magnate tossed around silver
and left carried out by his own bodyguard. Well, if he's going to be
tossing out silver like confetti, I'm happy for Capay to get drunk
every night!

And that wasn't the only excitment for the night, Lady le Storm and the
Poet Laudate exchanged words, with the former apologising and offering
amends, but the Poet Laudate would have none of it. The Baroness from
Tubor even suggested the Bard slap her, but no such luck, the bard left
and Lady le Storm soon went home.
