Could you give me examples of some reasons?

People travel with NPCs all the time; they're often ignored. I like the idea of working a gatekeeper into my RP, but sure, not all the time, nor would every criminal be offered that level of freedom. But if my choices were sitting in a cell by myself, rpyelling through a window, or sitting in a tavern with a guard breathing down my neck, I'd be all over door #3.
