On the afternoon of Balasdes, June 4th in the Sun Cycle of the Lord 376. The
Council of Grand Masters assembled in a dusky torch-lit room in the Knights
Keep to elect a successor Knight to the office of Earl Marshal, those who
were unable to attend had sent trusted proxies. There were sadly few to
choose from who met the required criteria, and had both the strength of arms
and required experience to lead the Knighthood into the future.

Fortunately, one newly belted Knight caught the attention of a few of the
more vocal Grand Masters. A Knight who bares the brand of a once Heretic,
who earned redemption and forgiveness through sacrifice and penance - both a
cautionary tale, and one of inspiration and pride. A lesson of redemption,
and some vocalised it would be quite a good opportunity public relations
scheme, in light of all the recent troubles between the classes and
institutions of Lithmore. Further fortunately, this particular Knight is
quite well loved and feared in a duplicitous degree by their compatriots. A
Vandagan ice queen, who can smile and bark commands in equal measure.

Obviously, such a thing had its detractors. A lesser group of Grand Masters
voiced their concerns on how one who wears the brand can be trusted. They
have betrayed the oath once, so why not again? It was met by a loud 'Who
else is there?', of which one replied as a clear jest, 'Perhaps one of the
Pages!' Met with a rambunctious laughter. Soon enough the detractors were
out-voted by the vocal majority, seeing the strength and fervor within within
her redemption. Her Knighting proved she was fit to rejoin the shield wall
of the Knights Lithmorran.

Their decision was made, signed, sealed and distributed.

In a recent June afternoon, many who found themselves idle one afternoon
filed out of Lithmore's west gate to a Grassy Knoll, where the Troubadours
had prepared to celebrate the Great Charalin Horse Festival with a smaller
event here at home. The plan showed all the inexperience of musicians trying
to deal with horses, but while the course turned into a semblance of a
battlefield, the jovial atmosphere provided by a host of Bards overcame the
chaos to spread, for one afternoon, laughter and companionship in the spirit
of competition for some of Lithmore's harried citizens. The event, led by
the well-dressed Lady dul Baildana of Hevstina, saw an expected champion race
ahead of the competition: Prisca Conner, the Mercenary Captain, and her horse
'Legend', the only Charali-bred horse in the competetion won by a staggering
distance.

Accompanied by a representative of the noble House von Radic of Vostock,
Justiciar Steven dul Greighton surprised tavern-goers at The Queen's Inn the
afternoon of Lunisda, June the 14th, by arriving in person and taking the
well-known barman, Lysander, into custody. Lysander was escorted to River
Square where five lashes were issued across his back for refusing service to
the Baron von Radic. The man was released after cursory medical examination
and sent home, where instructions were reported given to his niece to take
over the bar for now-- and to serve whatever noble walks through the doors.

Stone structures etched with a language few still recognize have crawled out
of the Urth in places around the city, or so the rural folk living outside
the walls have claimed. A modest flock of intrigued citizens have begun
gathering around the more obvious of sites, touching the oddly warm stone or
making charcoal rubbings from the engravings.

Note: This is a self-handling plot with a pre-built dungeon, clues to find
it, and hints that will keep you going along the way. Feel welcome to submit
plot advances under The Black Pillars header if you get stuck or want to try
something code won't accommodate.

(Class relations and health have shifted up, lawfulness has shifted down.)

The Royal Physicians have been astir all week. Finally, on a warm June
afternoon a procession of orderlies lead by Nursia Gardner emerged from the
Madison Hospital, laden with supplies of food and medicine. The journey came
to an end at Southside Almshouse - where they began to distribute supplies.

For the remainder of the month, those working the almshouse infirmary have
been directed to offer basic medical care to the poorest of the city, free of
charge. The mood of the southern slums has undergone a subtle change. The
common folk who have visited the almshouse are healthier, and there is a bit
less clear distrust for those with higher social standing. It isn't a
complete turnaround on things, but relations between the lowest members of
society and their 'betters' have marginally improved. After all, someone in
Northside cares whether they live or die.

A period of great activity has surrounded the Knights Lithmorran these past
weeks, at the appearance of the black pillars. Investigations, searches and
patrols have been spotted in increasing numbers around the city and its
limits. Although at this moment they seem non-threatening, that does not
means the Knights sit idle while a possible threat endangers the city.

Information given by concerned citizens has illuminated the location of the
pillars, and the Knights quickly organised teams to secure the sites and
discourage curious citizens from interloping on dangerous ground. In
addition, signs of recent excavation work has been spotted along the northern
road- centering on where the roads meet. The workers are drabbed in blue
tabards, and are all rather tight lipped about what they're doing. It seems
clear enough to any keen observer, they've been trying to dig out one of the
pillars and pull it from the Urth.

The Earl Marshal Vlora von Vashaak was heard accosting a few curious
lingerers, "Citizens!" She bellowed, "Under no circumstances are you to
approach these pillars, by order of the Church and Knights Lithmorran. They
are dangerous, and carry Taint within their structure. Any and all that have
taken rubbing's from these pillars must seek confession and blessing without
delay. Any found who has interacted with these things may find themselves
with an Inquisitor on their doorstep if they do not present themselves to the
Clergy. That is all. Clear the area."

Late in the evening of the 10th day of Quintilis, the bells rung out calling
the masses to the church. Of the few that were there, Countess Baildana and
a local smith were seen attending among other people easily forgotten. After
a long winded sermon on the sin of Pride, after the sermon he made an
announcement. He was stepping down as Grand Inquisitor, he claimed that he
admitted he did not thing he was ready for such a lofty position so soon
after starting his training as an Inquisitor and will be returning to that
position.

Late in the day, a host of ships head out of Lithmore toward the sea. Their
cargo? Members of the Order. Each set out to their respective destinations
to further the word of the Order. Among them is reported to be Inquisitor ab
Orreyl, supposedly heading to Tubor to help bring the peace of Lithmorran
Faith to the islands of pirates and smugglers.

Fresh off the long period of indecision by the Holy Synod after Arlow von
Lorven's sudden departure to Farin, their decision to move Earl Marshall
Athyndriel ab Orreyl to the head of the Inquisition, and his abrupt demotion
and transfer to Tubor, the office of the Holy Honour is not vacant for
long.

There is a closed meeting, a quick discussion, and a paltry few interviewed
-- no doubt candidates had already been deemed unsuitable not a season before
as High Inquisitor Jenifyr von Vakhrova held temporary authority during their
long search. A gathering was called -- not a Mass, but many from the city
still found themselves inside the Cathedral for the expected announcement --
and eyes were quick to find a diminuative brunette beauty with honeydew eyes
at the side of the Cardinal, she dressed in a flowing crimson silk robe
accompanied with silver tassels, a crimson linen wimple atop braided hair,
both obviously hastily found to fit the small woman.

"It is a time of conflux for the Holy Order, " the Cardinal somberly informed
those gathered. "Too many inadequate answers to questions which should never
have to be asked. Too many chosen who have neither the resilience nor the
wisdom to guide the Holy Inquisition. The Lady dul Baildana, Noblewoman of
Hevstina, served this Kingdom for fourteen years as a Countess, a time in
which she elevated her County to glorified heights yet struggled with
personal salvation. She has been reviewed and vindicated by the Holy
Inquisition, her capability for leadership unquestioned by the Synod, her
understanding of the holy texts extensive, her courage boldly proven."

The noblewoman was presented her Inquisitorial Ring formally; the Patron of
the Church proclaimed to her: "Holy Honour, I charge you with bringing
stability back to the Crimson ranks, to returning the confidence of the
people that the Holy Work of the Prophet-King Dav shall continue even today,
a century-and-more past his Urthly death. Speak, Grand Inquisitor, to your
flock."

The bright-eyed woman stepped forwards: the people did not clap, the mood was
not a celebratory one, and her confidence and practiced authority held the
people in silent rapture. "You have become accustomed to hearing long
speaches I have prepared to argue the delicate points of politics." Her lips
pressed together and she turned to the shallow stairs leading down from the
altar platform. "Speaches are not the province of the Inquisition, and there
is work to be done. Lord's Blessings, faithful. Be strong, be pious."
