A Trivial Influence Event

In announcing his vote for the Seneschal elections, High Inquisitor Astartes
stood before those who cared to gathered - a small gathering, at best - and
spoke to them, briefly, concerning his decisions.

"There are many stories, many adages, I could offer in my support of Brother
dul Betencourt. I could speak in depth about his service to the Crown.
About his service to the Knights. To the Holy Inquisition. I could speak of
our personal rapport, the indulgences that he has given me, the service that
we have performed, together, for the Holy Order. But I am not a man of great
words, only actions that are construed as such."

"Because actions, after all, are what matter, in Lithmore. Many fancy words
have been offered, many situations and rememberances have been brought to the
table, may people have -spoken- about their support for the Crown, and the
Order. Just as many people have -spoken- about how innocent and worthy of
forgiveness they are within Ahalin, as well."

"I act. And I support the Brother dul Betencourt because of his actions, not
his damndable words. I have had the honor and right to serve with the man -
how many of you can say the same? He speaks, and he speaks often. I've
little respect for his words. I know his actions. Quick to arrive at my
side with a blade. Quick to offer a bolstering shoulder when I am injured.
Quick to volunteer his service. Quick to work alongside the Order, for the
service of the Lord and the Crown. Lord help the man who listens to word,
alone. Lord help the man who is assuaged so quickly by paltry payments of
silver. Lord help the man that knows not the joy of service to the Lord and
the Barony. That is all. You are all dismissed."

_________________________________________________________________________
It was early on a crisp Maritus day when many residents of the eastern
section of Lithmore city and the surrounding farmlands were awoken to the
sound of distant thunder. Yet despite no clouds being visible within the
dawn sky, the thunder grew louder every instant. Many concerned citizens
left their homes and headed towards the east gate to see what in the blazes
the source of this thunder was. Even several perturbed reeves and clergy
went to see what the fuss was about. None were prepared for the sight they
beheld.

Arriving from the direction of Loryth was a cloud dust and snow. As the
moving dust storm approached, many could see what amounted to an army of
oxen, each and everyone pulling some sort of structure obscurred by the dust.
A smaller number of mounted and unmounted workers moved around the beasts and
structure, ensuring they kept on path and pace. Two lone figures atop
horseback seemed to lead the entire procession. It was not until the
procession drew even closer, the ground shaking beneath the hooves of the
many beasts, that the more social of the onlookers would see one of the two
figures was none other than Vicannia le Serre, with an aged Tubori male
accompanying her. Reeves rode out to meet the two riders, though despite
protests by the reeves to cease the oxen kept forward. Serre did not seem to
even give the reeves the time of day as the aged tubori passed along sheafs
of documents. Those present swear they saw the reeves trying to comprehend
just what they were presented with, but alas no further attempts to cease the
procession was made.

Even more people had gathered by the time the procession reached the walls of
Lithmore, with many of the displaced Tubori arriving upon hearing many, if
not all, of the workers in the procession seemed to be of Tubori origin.
Upon orders the oxen were slowly brought to a stop, and as the dust and snow
settled, the shape of what the oxen had been pulling became clear to all,
even the lone Acolyte ringing the Cathedral's bell.

The oxen had been pulling a massive barge, atop an even larger platform. The
barge rivaled even the Grand Cathedral and Royal Palace in terms of sheer
size. Those who tried to question the purposes and motives of such a vessel
received no answers as all workers began the undertaking of setting up the
complex series of pulleys and other machinations used to lift such a vessel
over the walls of the city. It took several days for the task to reach
completion, but soon the barge found it's home within the docks just north of
the now burned Tubori Sector.

Despite their quarter and very homes having been burned to the ground weeks
earlier, many Tubori flocked to the docks to bear witness to the barge,
curious on what it was for. They did not have to wait long as the main ramp
of the vessel was lowered onto the shore, and the familiar form of Vicannia
le Serre stepped out of the barge and stood before the onlookers

"People of Lithmore, but more importantly my fellow Tubori!" She began "Today
I and the Le Serre Trading Conglomerate gift our fine city The Klein's Arrow!
Your new Tubori quarter. My grandfather Klein le Serre saw fit to have such
a modern marvel built beneath the noses of the rest of the Conglomerate.
While it is unfortunate he did not live to see such an oddity used by his
people, I like to believe he would be proud to see it used to house and
shelter his fellow Sons and Daughters of the Isles!" She paused as a
cacophany of roars and cheers sounded out from the crowd "But not only can it
house thirty full households, but he saw fit to ensure various levels of the
barge went to a full market, and even it's own tavern. It would have taken
years to rebuild and restabilize our once grand quarter, but with The Klein's
Arrow we can cut that to mere months! The Sons and Daughters of the Isles
will not go Homeless!" Vicannia shouted, pumping a single fist into the air,
with a sea of fists joining her in solidarity.

"None of this would be possible with Mister Anton le Bren," Vicannia
continues, gesturing the aged tubori man who had rode with her forward "For
he was wise enough to recall my Grandfather's documents on the Klein's Arrow,
and it was his wise advice that saw the Conglomerate undertake the difficult
and costly task of transporting such a vessel from Longpoint to Lithmore.
But nothing is impossible as long as risks are willing to be taken. And
let's not forget the hundred Conglomerate workers who left the isles to
assist in bringing their fellow Tubori a new quarter." Applause and cheers
were made for the multitude of workers who even as Vicannia spoke were busy
putting the finishing touches on the vessel

"In the coming month we will slowly be moving all those displaced by the
Tubori Quarter Fires into the Klein's Arrow. I ask for your patience during
this trying time. However I believe now is the time for celebrations!"
It is said that night the Klein's Arrow was filled with the laughter, joy and
camraderie of those who had so recently lost so much. Even non-tubori,
freemen, gentry and noble alike were welcomed with open arms. And for a
night everyone was equal on the Klein's Arrow.

With the arrival of the massive ship that has then been turned into the new
Tubori quarter, the troubadours have been out in force. They've made sure
people know that it's Vicannia le Serre and her family who had the massive
ship and donated it to the Capital to help those displaced by the fire. They
also talk to people about how this is just another sign of Le Serre doing
what she can to help everyone, no matter their station.

Following events at the supposed Seneschal Debate, many of the supporters of
Vicannia made their voices known, outrage being the common thread.

"Can you believe it? The Count and his supporters couldn't even win a
campaign without coming up with some story of Serre is working with the
Rubeus. I will bet my life savings that such a case isn't even real, and
that it's just their way of ensuring the Count wins." This being a more
common mindset among Serre's diehard supporters "Can't stand that she showed
them up. It's disgusting."

A Trivial Influence Event

That morning, at the end of the mass, a podgy little man known in southside
as Barry displayed a cask of mead in the middle of the square facing the
southside church, and, a shot of mead in a hand, climbed on it and began to
speak to the populace, deliberately pointing his shot to one or the other of
the persons he was facing.

"Hey, you! Yeah, you, with the ugly face... Are you going to tell me you
consort with mages? And you, there, who smells like a pig. Are you going to
tell me you reject the Order's protection?"

And as he suddenly becomes very angry, the podgy man violently hits his cask
with his heel, echoing a loud 'BLAM!' on the square, before giving a
memorable roasting to his fellow southsiders:

"You are all a bunch of heretics if you do! Yeah! Heretics! What is
crossing your mind when you support that Le Serre?! Do you want more demons
in the sewings?!"

A grumble raises in the little crowd surrounding the cask of mead, and the
podgy man, apparently satisfied, recovers a more friendly mood:

"Support that knight, he is our best bet now. And I offer a shot of mead to
all those who do."

Some people remained on the place for hours, drinking mead, narrating stories
involving demons on the sewings and the protection of the order.

A cool breeze blew through River Square as the former Epion, the candidate
for Seneschal, Vicannia le Serre is led out of Ahalin in chain and shackle by
Grand Master ab Gravespeare. Whispers amongst the crowd fell to a hush when
The Grand Inquisitor, Empena dul Cybinese stepped forward with a drawn look
to her disjointed features and announced over a gathered crowd at River
Square: @ "Faithful of Lithmore, I know that the events of the following days
have been troublesome and concerning. Let us gather together in this time of
difficulty for a moment of faithful remembrance to our Duties and
Declarations of the Faith. For it in the times most difficult that we must
steadfast remember the pathway and purpose that the Lord has set before us
through his will to King Dav. Today we set with grim task, yet one that the
Erra calls us to fulfill." @ "Vicannia le Serre has since my time of Lithmore
seen to many good works for the betterment of the people of Lithmore - and
yet there is a dark shadow that clings to them. And what have recent times
taught us that even amidst good deeds must the light of the Lord and his
purity be shone in the blackest corners to dispel the darkness."

"Two souls struggle within the Urthly confines of this woman - akin in
demonstration to unbridled madness or demonic possession. And thus do we
seek to see her cleansed and rectified of this split to her very being and
her immortal soul. This darker shadow of her soul, known as Iuku was a known
associate of Mechislav Krysov and for the many months since his own pyring
has the Holy Inquisition sought his associates and those that did harbor to
heart and hearth those who assisted the mages who brought such dread terror
and death to the good people of Lithmore."

"Iuku, this shadow, this demon that plagues her has of its own will confessed
the following: That the line of Vicannia le Serre is tainted with those who
embrace magery, that her mother and father and her brother before her were
and are mages and though she was born free and untainted they scorned and
reviled her pure soul and in turn she did learn to do so herself. She sought
consortion with the mage Mechislav Krysov for the use and possession of a
tome of dark magic. Blood rituals and sacrifice - the same as all the
members of his dread coven before him. She has chosen a victim to align with
a time she would gain power to carry out her dread ambition - the murder of
her tainted parents through magical or demonic means."

Some debate occurs amongst those that attended as to the rest of the speech,
but several recall that the accused - Vicannia le Serre addressed the crowd
in voice and demeanor far different than her own cast insults at the Marquis
of Dastur attending in the crowd and sought to speak poorly about her?
Their? Its? Own good works of charity and those that believed in them.

In the end, flames were lit and the cleansing of the pyre complete and quiet
prayers were offered in Lithmorran and Tubori by the Grand Inquisitor because
the crowd was bidden to leave:

"These demons, these mages, those that would seek your harm with pen and
parchment, with tome and trial, they seek as ever to take from you your faith
and devotion in the Lord, in the Holy Order, they seek to sow minds and
hearts with discord and confusion. They seek to drive darkness into all
hearts, question in how we protect the people from demons and darkness.
Stand firm, people of Lithmore, rejoice in the mercy of the Lord."

Crowds gather in River Square and whisper and speak upon renewing their faith
and convictions and considering the words of the former Epion le Serre as she
spoke in an unurthly voice and some repeat what the woman said:

"Her final words are a warning. How many flocked to her, seeing her as some
savior? How many believed she was righteous and good, only to be ignorant of
my existence beneath that exterior. Her wording may be off, but the warning
is still a warning, with her and I as the example."

Confused and concerned they consider what that means for what the woman had
said or promised during the long campaign. They seem to then decide amongst
themselves and consider with thoughtful prayer that they must then back the
Count dul Betencourt, if by the woman's own dying words she was not to be
trusted or her word believed.

They look to faith and hope to lead them, what else is left for them to do?

Signs of activity are spotted in and around the town hall, the new Seneschal
apparently turning the place quite upside down in his crusade of
re-organisation. Various smartly dressed council functionaries set up a
small standing podium just outside the entrance. They are followed by a
small contingent of men-at-arms in the colours of house dul Betencourt, white
and black and sigiled with a black diamond. A moment or two later, Count
Sauvaige dul Betencourt emerges from the town hall to a growing gathering of
citizens filling up Church Square.

"Loyal, pious and honourable citizens of Lithmore City." A large, Vavardi
smile as he spreads his arms in a welcoming motion. "Thank you for putting
your faith and support in me, I will do it justice I can promise you that.
It will not be easy, and it will not be quick to turn this great city into
the beacon of prosperity that it is bred for. We have enemies, within and
without. Many of you have heard about the fate of my opponent, Vicannia le
Serre. A snake hiding behind a charitable mask, I do not fault those who
supported her - we were all fooled by her smiles, even I."

He pauses, and rubs at his chin. "This is our city Lithmorran, Vandagan,
Vavardi, Tubori, Farin. We all live here, and serve the kingdom and her
Grace the Queen in what ways we can. We are all similar. I ask you to
continue, to continue to be great. We must have unity if we are to press
forwards into a bright future. Love your neighbour, support your neighbour
and we will cross the finish line without tripping ourselves up. YES?" His
hand smacks against the podium.

"We are shaped by our faith, our strengths and our weaknesses. Identify
them, and use them to the cities advantage. Now, in the next few days I will
begin an audit of all the Guilds of Lithmore, to better utilise them for a
brighter future for us all. Nobles, Gentry, Freeman and even those who live
within the bounds of Southside. None are beyond the shining light of the
Order, and the Crown. My door is always open for those who wish an audience,
unless it is closed. Then please schedule an appointment. Let us go forward
into the future, together. His hand lashes out and grips at the air
dramatically.

Lord bless you all, and may the Chalice protect and guide you." His lengthy
verbal prose finished with, a hand smacks to his chest in salute of those
gathered in the square. He wastes no time in vacating the podium to get back
to work, his men-at-arms linger in the square to usher people away.

The day was pleasant and balmy for Maius and the sunlight had just hit what
painters call 'the perfect hour', where the light touches everything with a
curious illumination. Clouds had been hovering from the north for a while
now, creeping over the mountains like ominous black smoke, but for the most
part people were doing their best to ignore them and enjoy the evening.

It wasn't long, however, before the storm came, and with it a voice on the
wind, mystical and imperious.

"Balathumel, she looked upon
The place we had put statues on
and found the statuary bare -
there wasn't any statues there.

"Like a lowly, creeping snake,
some sly camper thought to take
Some small things that were not theirs
from atop the landing stairs.

"Now in the distance, thunder brews,
this thief has bit more than he chews.
For each day passing they're not back
[the wind picks up, muffling the words]

"So please heed our polite demand,
Return these things
Regards,
Red hand."

It was then that the clouds burst and a thick rain pelted Lithmore for a good
hour before the clouds subsided.
