Early in the morning of Quintilis 15 375, Lithmore awoke to a dull bong from
the cathedral bell that should have sounded out for matina. Upon
investigation, the new Grand Inquisitor, Arielle le Kekoa, was found in the
cathedral belltower hanging by her neck within the large iron bell, quite
dead. An announcement from the Cardinal expressed that the Synod mourns her
loss and will arrange for a replacement in the near future, and her death
will be investigated. It had only been a short time since le Kekoa had
gained the position, stepping over from her position as Earl Marshall when
the previous Grand Inquisitor was forcibly removed.

As the lesson on herbology came to an end the Dean looked weary. Tired,
even. All through the lecture he'd been playing with a piece of paper and it
was then, after hesitation, that he stood up before his adult students and
delivered the speech written upon it.

"Class, before you leak back into the city, I'd like to just make a short
announcement. I've been Dean of the University for a solid few years now. I
originally transferred here from Vavard where I taught entomology and
herbology. With the constant absenteeism of my teaching staff, I'm finding
that my field work has been greatly reduced."

"There is something dark and unpleasant happening here at the university.
I've made these concerns clear to the Order and Reeves. Historically, the
university has attracted dangerous mages and those seeking to make poisons
and I don't see any change in that today. Primrose von Tethno was an example
of a mage who taught at the university right under my very nose and was a
practitioner of the dark arts.

"A series of losses to the university have occurred recently too that have
pushed my decision to retire. Sibylle dul Fontaine and Marossa Gardner -
wonderful women who tended to the gardens and library books. Both have just
disappeared without trace and missed scheduled meetings or left items of
import behind. I don't wish to be associated with whatever abyssal nonsense
must have been brewing for this to happen.

"Only a few months ago was my office broken into. Even more disturbing was
that nothing was stolen and that the Reeves did not investigate. This has
not passed my notice.

"I will be moving out of the building in the coming few days in pursuit of
the sciences and improving my collections in peace. My advice to the future
Dean is to have the entire place blessed and exorcised.

"Thank you, that is all."

The class packed up their pestles and mortars, their potted plants and their
herbal pastes and filtered out of Lithmore University.

The Dean gave the empty classroom a final glance and an exhausted sigh before
shouldering his own satchel and departing.

As the dramatic story of the Order continues, a new Grand Inquisitor has been
appointed following recent tragedies. Arlow von Lorven has taken office,
among questions of his eligibility. Just a few days ago, the man was merely
an acoloyte. If one believes his explanation, it would seem the man and his
family have had ties with the Order that stretch back all the way to Vandago,
which apparently left him in a high standing with ranking clergy upon his
arrival in Lithmore.

Regardless of the thoughts surrounding this, the Grand Inquisitor held mass
to make the announcement, and provided some explanation for the piling issues
at hand. Arielle le Kekoa was apparently murdered, and the Holy Inquisition
seeks Empena and Rothgar for questioning, although at the moment, no official
warrants or charges have been levied.

"I've reviewed the evidence surrounding former Grand Inquisitor Empena dul
Cybinese and former High Inquisitor Rothgar Astartes. This was enough to
warrant a Review of Faith. I contacted the two, and they willingly turned
themselves into my custody."

"We conducted this Review over the course of an entire day, and it took
nearly a week to process all the evidence I have been given. Concluding this
Review, I, Grand Inquisitor Arlow von Lorven, with the support of the Holy
Inquisition and the Order in Lithmore, have found both Emepena and Rothgar to
be free of any Holy crimes, and not guilty of any betrayals of Faith."

"While I understand how the Lord Justiciar came to the conclusions he did in
his own investigation, I believe he is missing the context that I have in my
possession. The evidence I have, paired with Holy Confessions, proves
without doubt that Empena and Rothgar were not acting out of political
desires, nor were they accepting deals or otherwise making alliances with
mages."

"We must have trust in our leaders of Faith to take care of magery and taint.
There is a copious amount of misinformation circulating, and I'm afraid that
without proper investigation, it leads to false conclusions. I'm also afraid
that the actions of the Justiciar have permanently compromised two people who
are free of sin, and in my mind, crime. I would heavy recommend that his
warrants are re-assessed, and his investigative techniques re-evaluated, but
I would not impede his perception of Justice, should he continue to pursue
the pair. Let it be restated, that Empena and Rothgar have stood in
Confession, and withstood their Review of Faith, and are judged free of sin
and crime in the eyes of the Order."

The Baron of Vostock Drazhan von Radic has recently been seen journeying
toward the capital of Lithmore on official business. Although rumors abide
about his reasons for coming the main ones are about marriage, cultural
learning or fine cheese? Whatever the reasons Lithmore is about to become
home to yet another noble, and this is one who certainly won't be put off by
the cold weather.

This augustus 2, on the late eldes, the southsiders had another more
discussion about the disorder reigning on the higher circles of the Order.
Taken to task, and obviously sad to see her flocks not knowing who to
believe, the young sister Cerise lead them to the church, and, under
the old southside's priest juridiction, rang the bells, calling for a
mass.
Cerise raised her arms high above, waiting that a respectful silence was
made in the church. She looked at the people amongst the crowd, here, and
there, not hiding her sadness, and once everyone could feel concerned, she
raised her eyes to the sky, and turned, face to altar, back to the crowd.
And within the silence, the low whisper of her voice could be heared. "My
Lord, we are trying to be exemplar, but we fail." And slowly, her arms
lowered, as well as her head.
"When we fail, we accept penance", concluded the little sister, not
raising her voice more. And she felt on her knees. The gray-haired old
priest, who has dealt with countless situations and is quick to
understand, retrieved a martinet from his sack and approached Cerise,
claiming, with a much louder voice: "Sister Cerise, you are
representing us today, and will receive penance for us all". With
that, he raised the martinet high above, and Cerise, on her knees,
slowly exposed the pale skin of her back.
And five times, the martinet lashed Cerise's back. Five times, Cerise
refrained a scream.
That purification being made, she received the old priest's help to
stand up, turned face to the crowd, retrieved the golden chalice and
whispered "We are trying to be examplar within the Order, but we are
nothing but human, and can fail like any other." And she raised the
golden chalice to offer her flocks to drink the holy water.

(A small shift from Morale to Lawfulness)

As trouble in the Reeves continues, more and more Knights are seen,
supposedly off duty. They are lingering on corners, they are walking in
groups, and they are obviously on the lookout for anything suspicious.
Though they tell people that their only duty is to detain and inform the
Reeves, more than one would-be pickpocket or criminal is stopped or dragged
to Ahalin by the zealous religious force. Indeed, it matches the rumours
coming from the Keep that the Lord Earl Marshall has called for Knights and
Squires to volunteer their off-time in keeping the city clear of the lawless,
while crime is at a recent high.

Months after her confession to the murders of the former Justiciar Rimilde
von Rievirkrintz and the Chief Magistrate Jozafat Steenson, the woman known
as Dorothy Lassiworth was found perished in her cell, barely nary a sack of
bones with flesh. Reports from within the Tower are that the late Lassiworth
succumbed to madness in her last days, and refused to eat and wash herself,
declaring that it was her 'penance'.

For egregious offenses against the Lord Lorrent de Bastion, Lord Micah dul
Legrange, and Lord Drazhan von Radic, Halgrim Jotunbjorn was escorted to
River Square in manacles by the Lord Justiciar and Detective dul Tremoille,
where he received a series of brutal lashes before a crowd of onlookers. A
speech was given before the gathered:

"In these troubling times, the rule of law must be treated as sacrosanct by
those with the authority to uphold them. There is no man or woman alive so
highly-ranked as to rise above Her Royal Majesty's rule. Halgrim Jotunbjorn
openly disrespected three highborn men and dared to declare himself on equal
standing. As any moral citizen should when they have made an inarguable
error, he has given himself over to the Queen's justice of his own volition,
and wished to offer his apology to the Lords he challenged."

The man collapsed once his lashes were complete, and Bloodletter Prisca
Connor of the Physicians Guild was on hand to provide medical treatment.

In the morning hours of Augustus 3rd, Captain Prisca Connor and the captains
of several other mercenary companies marched their armed and armored troops
down Tavern Road, meeting no resistance. They came to the Mercenary guild
hall, where several southside families have been squatting. Displaying the
deed to the property, Captain Connor promptly had them tossed them out on the
street with their belongings. "We didn't wish to do it this way, but your
Tenebrae left us little choice," explained the scar-faced woman. "The
Mercenary General is engaged on the front lines against the Daravi, and
hearing of the situation with the hall and threats against the mercenaries
wishing to make use of it, authorized the sale of the hall to us. With the
damage done to the hall, large-scale renovations will be needed, and we will
not be able to host you. Arrangements have been made for your stay at either
the almshouse or boarding house." In a later posted notice, she assured that
all guild-affiliated mercenary companies will be welcomed following the
renovations. By the end of the day, the old entrance to the hall had been
sealed off with brick, and a stone wall built, with a new entrance to the
massive hall under construction off of South Road. Interestingly, a single
iron pike was set into the wall where the entrance once was.
